families are unique social system insofar as membership is based on combination of biological, legal, affectional, geografhic and historicalties. in contrast to other social system, entry into family siystem is trought birth, adoption, fostering and marriage can leave only by death. severing all vamily connections is never posible. furthermore, while family members fulfil certain roles wich entail specific definable tasks such as the provision of food and shelter, in is the relationshif within families wich are primary and irreplaceable. with single-parenthood, divorce, separation and remarriage as common events, a narrow and traditional definition of the family is not longer usuful (walsh,1993)

THE FAMILY LIFECYCLE
having noted the limitations of traditional model of the family structure, we find, faradoxically, the most useful available models of family, with other family form being conceptualised as deviations, from this norm (carter and McGoldrick, 1989).
